Goldsmiths became a college of London University in 1991; but its history as a college goes back over a hundred years.
It is based in New Cross, a culturally diverse area of south east London, which has good bits and bad bits.
To this day, Goldsmiths maintains a strong emphasis on the arts, and is famous for its art degrees - its reputation is further enhanced by its many celebrity graduates. In the last ten years, no fewer than five former art students have won the coveted Turner Prize, and Goldsmiths was recently voted one of the nation's coolest brands. The hall of fame includes Fiona Rae, Damien Hirst and Antony Gormley. Plus pop stars Alex James, John Cale and the outlandish Brian Molko of Placebeo all got degrees at Goldsmiths, as did grande dame of 1960s fashion Mary Quant and politician Tessa Jowell.
Another area where Goldmsmiths shines is its Media and Communications department. It was recently awarded an excellent mark from the national Quality Assurance Agency, who assess teaching and learning in universities, and the recent RAE (Research Assessment Excercise ) awarded the department a 5* rating in research in December last year.
Goldsmiths has an active students' union, and students also have access to all many facilities of the University of London as well as those on campus.
Accommodation is guaranteed for all first years.
